CHAPTER 11

Ginny paced from one corner of the room to the other, fisting then stretching her hands as she tried to put the last few hours in focus. Belle must have alerted the coast guard that Tim was at the infirmary. It was the only way any of this made sense. No one else knew about their impromptu meeting at the lighthouse except for Belle, and knowing her, she figured reporting Tim to the authorities would keep her and the other girls out of trouble.

What really bothered her was the way Tim had looked at her as the military police had loaded him into the car. It was as if she had betrayed him somehow. How could that be? They had only met two days ago. He didn’t even know her, though it felt easy to be around him, as if they’d known each other for months rather than minutes. She stopped to stare out the window. Why did it hurt that the man had such a low opinion of her?

The door to the office clicked open, then Officer Chapline stepped inside. “Good afternoon, Ginny.”

She wasn’t in the mood for pleasantries. Ginny turned to face him. “Why was I brought here? I had patients to attend to.”

“Why don’t you take a seat, and we’ll get started.”

His calmness irritated her. She marched over and took the chair directly in front of his desk. “You didn’t answer my question.”

“We’ll get to that in a moment.” He opened the folder, perused it, then turned his attention to her. “I want to know exactly when you found Mr. Elliott.”

“I thought Belle would’ve told you.” She sat at the edge of her chair, her nerves wound so tight, she was ready to spring like a jack-in-the-box.

“I’d like to hear it from you.”

He seemed so calm, far cooler than what she felt at the moment. Maybe he was just looking for answers like she was. “He showed up at the lighthouse last night. That was the first I knew anything about him.”

“You didn’t know your troop of Girl Scouts had hidden him at the old lightkeeper’s house?”

Ginny knew it looked bad, but they were thirteen, old enough to know better than to do something like that, particularly now. “I will keep a closer watch on them from now on.”

He closed the file, then sat back in his chair. “What did Elliott want?”

“You know what he wanted,” she answered, then scoffed when he just sat there. “He wanted access to the infirmary and the morgue so he could look for the same German we’re looking for.”

Chapline’s expression turned interested. “Did he find him?”

She shook her head. “I knew Schmidt hadn’t been in the infirmary. We haven’t had anyone with any significant kind of accent, but the morgue was another story. Tim was able to confirm that Rolf Schmidt isn’t among the dead.”

The man drew in a deep breath and sighed, disappointed. “Which means he’s either lost at sea or found a place along the beach like Elliott did and is holed up there.
